Barbadian Roston Chase copped the Men’s Cricketer of the Year award at the 2016/17 Cricket West Indies/West Indies Players Association award ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus on Friday night.
Chase, who recently made his transition to international cricket, won the prestigious award for the first time. The award was one of four for the Christchurch resident, who was also named Test Cricketer of the Year; First Class Four-Day Cricketer of the Year and Emerging Player of the Year.
Taking the Women’s Cricketer of the Year award was West Indies captain Stephanie Taylor. The Jamaican, who won the award eight times consecutively, has now achieved a ninth overall hold on the prestigious award to go along with her two other awards of the night. She was also named West Indies One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 Cricketer of the year.
Another Jamaican, Andre Russell, was named West Indies Twenty20 Player of the Year, while West Indies captain Jason Holder won the One-Day International Player of the Year award. Trinbagonian Dwayne Bravo copped the Regional T20 Cricketer of the Year award.
Chase has played just 10 Test matches for the West Indies but has an impressive record, having scored 728 runs at an average of 48.53. Included among his runs are three hundreds and three half centuries and his best is 137 not out. Added to this, he has snared 17 wickets. In First Class cricket, he has featured in 49 matches, scoring 2773 runs at an average of 43.32 with five hundreds and 16 half centuries. His 80 wickets at the First Class level has come at a very good average of 28.55.
The Under-19 Cricketer of the Year was Joshua Bishop from Barbados. The spinning all rounder has registered some good performances for the West Indies U-19s in List A cricket.
The annual event, organised by WIPA, was the 14th but fifth jointly between the two cricketing bodies.
